Two 2 m cantilevers in 3D, each twisted by 1 kN m at its free end: a UC 203 x 203 x 46 (open) and an SHS 200 x 200 x 8 (closed) of almost the same weight. The box carries the torque as a shear flow around its walls (Bredt, tau = T / (2 A0 t)); the open section can only twist its thin plates (St Venant, tau = T t / J), and its stresses and twist are many times larger.
